WoMen Against Rape
WoMen Against Rape was founded in 1993 in Maun, Ngamiland District by a group of women in response to the rape of three Bushmen women by white farmers, who were never prosecuted.
The organization was thus founded on the ethos of activism and volunteerism, which continues to colour its identity, management, and activities. The organization was formally registered as a Trust on April 28, 1995. The Trust Deed specified four Founder Members, all women.
WoMen Against Rape’s mission is to reduce violence against women and children in the Northwest District by:
- Empowering women and children
- Providing support to survivors
- Delivering public education programs
- Advocating for legal reforms.
WAR also works to mobilize the community to engage in discussions about gender and power dynamics and bring about awareness of violence against women. In addition, WAR provides lifeskills workshops to children and mobilizes youth in Students Against Rape Clubs
